    The Geosciences team within RSK Group is one of the UK’s largest geotechnical and contaminated land consultancies with ambitious plans for growth in the future. The Geosciences team provides consultancy and design services to a range of external clients including engineers, house-builders, oil companies and local authorities. Our current workload includes major infrastructure projects, housing developments, landfills and commercial warehouses.     The Geosciences team has a strong Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) Group with the vision of developing of a highly qualified and skilled risk assessment based support group that represents the forefront of current best practice and expertise, with continued commitment to learning and development and support for all RSK offices (UK and international).

     

    RSK is currently recruiting for a Senior or Principal Consultant (risk assessor), with a specific focus on controlled waters risk assessment to join our Geosciences consultancy team and the RSK QRA Group. The Geosciences team currently has seven ASoBRA risk assessors, all of which provide risk assessment support to external clients across RSK UK and international teams, while undertaking more routine work in the field of land condition or wider environmental issues for our clients.

     

    RSK has offices across the UK and therefore can offer flexibility with regards to office location.

     

    Senior or Principal Consultant (risk assessor) – UK Wide

     

    The Consultant would be responsible for undertaking controlled waters and/or human health risk assessments, typically detailed quantitative risk assessment (DQRA), and providing support to both external clients and other teams (UK and international) within RSK.

     

    The Consultant may additionally be responsible for undertaking and managing project investigations in relation to land contamination with a geotechnical and/or an environmental content (depending on experience).

     

    All Project work must be carried out with due diligence, adhered to by the RSK procedures & completed within the given cost budgets and time scales agreed. Good communication is required to inform/liaise with the client periodically with updates & any issues raised. It is expected that Consultant grade staff should be self-motivated, exhibit a proactive approach, and work well within a team environment.

     

    General responsibilities: 

    • Completion of DQRAs for controlled waters and/or human health
    • Undertaking, supervising or reviewing (depending on experience) Phase I and Phase II investigations for environmental and/or geotechnical purposes in line with national standards and codes of practice
    • Managing fieldwork activities and subcontractors (depending on experience)
    • Undertaking Project Management duties and resolving any technical issues
    • Writing factual and/or interpretative reports

    In addition you may be, depending on experience:

    • Managing a variety of geo-environmental and/or geotechnical projects for both external clients and for other teams within RSK
    • Providing technical and scientific support at all stages of assigned projects and controlling project costs
    • Preparing and checking technical notes, drawings and geotechnical and/or geo-environmental reports;
    • Prepare proposals and tenders and contribute to business development activity;
    • Travel to other offices and sites within the UK (as needed). 

    In addition you will: 

    • Mentor and support new team members as appropriate, providing guardianship and imparting your knowledge and expertise to less experience employees;
    • Establish and develop strong working relationships with new and existing clients, which is integral to the growth of the Geosciences department and the wider business;
    • Provide technical leadership in the day to day delivery of projects. 

    This role would be suitable for applicants who are already experienced risk assessors or are existing consultants with a comprehensive understanding of risk assessment who wish to further develop this skill.

     

    Critically you will understand the importance of building strong working relationships by delivering a successful service on time and within budget.  

     

    Person Specification:

    • BSc or equivalent in Civil, Geology or Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Science or similar
    • Chartered status with a relevant professional body, or working towards Chartered status (i.e. 5-10 years relevant experience)
    • SoBRA accredited risk assessor (RSoBRA or ASoBRA) or working towards accreditation in one or more disciplines (vapour, ground gas, human health, controlled waters)
    • Significant and demonstrable experience of site conceptualisation and undertaking generic quantitative risk assessments for controlled waters and/or human health
    • A thorough or developing knowledge of detailed quantitative risk assessment (DQRA)    
    • An understanding of geology and ground investigation works
    • Demonstrable experience of using a variety of risk assessment models (e.g. RTM, RBCA, CLEA)
    • Able to complete factual and interpretative assessments
    • Able to deliver projects and work within a multi-disciplinary consultancy
    • Able to write proposals that are both technically sound and commercially accurate
    • Provide strong technical leadership and mentoring skills to junior staff
    • Strong track record in managing time and resources effectively and within budget.
