Key to achieving a sustainable farming business is managing the fundamental resources of soil and water engineering to maximise efficient production whilst undertaking measures to protect the environment and biodiversity for the future. We are looking for individuals straight out of college who would like to on a two year fixed term apprentice programme and be part of a wider team. Following this fixed term the individuals performance will be assessed with a view of offering a permanent position.

 

Soil and Water Engineering – Apprentice: working out of Rosemaund, Hereford

 

Suitable candidates will need to be prepared to be ‘hands-on’ and learn skills on the job, be willing to work flexible hours and be able to travel  around the country and stay away from home.

 

Key Areas:

 

  • Learn the requirements of consultancy to deliver technical and business-focussed soil and water engineering advice and design.
  • Learn how to work
    • in a team;
    • with farmers and,
    • with corporate clients.
  • Learn and develop technical skills in the following skill areas:
    • Soils – understand differing soil types and basic soil issues.
    • Drainage – basic design skills in agricultural drainage and SuDs.
    • Surveying – drainage character and level surveys
    • Technical drawing – ability to interpret technical drawings and learn CAD skills.
  • To learn the skills of technical report writing.
  • Understand the basics of business development, including marketing of soil and water engineering services and sales.
  • To develop skills with a view of registration with a professional body e.g The Institution of Agricultural Engineers. 

Person Specification:

 

  • Full UK driving licence and ability to travel away from home base when required. (If you do not have a driving licence then please confirm whether you are planning to take the driving test).
  • An understanding of Microsoft software including Windows, Outlook, Word, Powerpoint and Excel.
  • GCSEs in English and Maths.
